Essential Home Maintenance 101: Day Long Hands On (SUNDAY)

Are you a renter or new homeowner? Do you wish you were more handy around the house? Then our Essential Home Maintenance 101 Workshop is a MUST-ATTEND!

 

This hands-on and interactive workshop is presented with live demos to help you learn to prevent and diagnose common problems, conduct basic repairs on your own (or know when to call in a professional), and feel more at ease when facing emergency and permanent repairs.

 

Topics Include: 

  • Essential Toolbox – a tool petting zoo and starter tools checklist
  • Power Tool Practice – how to safely use and operate a nail gun, stapler, and power drill
  • Plumbing – addressing leaks and clogs, and how to replace a toilet
  • Caulking – sealing gaps to prevent air and water infiltration
  • Electrical – replacing an outlet or switch
  • HVAC – key things to know
  • Wall Repair – beginner’s patching and anchoring techniques
  • General Safety & Maintenance Rituals

 

All ages 18+, all genders are welcome. No experience is needed.

 

About the Hosts:

 

This workshop is hosted and taught by Erin Helland of HardHat Diplomat. Erin is a board certified national home inspector and commercial and residential RENOVATION COACH. Erin has rehabbed multiple properties, created long-term and vacation rentals, and coached property owners through remodeling projects across the United States from simple room makeovers to multi-million dollar endeavors. She loves to share her organizational tools and experience to help others – especially women – become their own project managers and feel confident in making informed and cost-effective decisions when buying and renovating a home.

How to Prepare:

 

  • Dress comfortably
  • Bring pen & paper
  • Pack a lunch. We will have a 1 hour lunch break. You are also welcome to visit a nearby food establishment
  • It is good to practice various hands-on techniques with us using your own tools, so bring them along if you have them (drill, battery, screwdrivers)
  • Light refreshments will be provided for the afternoon session

Participation Policies:

 

Class Size: We require a minimum of 6 participants to hold this workshop as scheduled. 

Refunds: Due to the nature of this workshop and materials required, refunds are:  100% if canceled 14 calendar days prior. // 40% if canceled up to 8 days prior. //No refunds for no shows or week-of cancellations.

Masks: As it will be cold/flu season, workshop guests may be requested to wear a mask for the duration of their workshop regardless of their vaccination status. Presenters may be unasked.

Event FAQs

Parking
There is limited hourly or permitted residential (DC Zone 1) street parking within a multi-block radius. A paid lot is available within walking distance at Tivoli Square (the Giant Grocer) or DCUSA where the Target is located. We strongly encourage ride share services or public transit - there are numerable buses in this corridor & the Yellow/Green Columbia Heights Metro is just a few blocks away.
Getting Into the Space
The office is located on the 2nd floor - stairs only, no elevator. The entry for "District Bridges" is on the 11th street side. (This is a shared building at the corner of Park and 11th NW; the door is to the left of Queen's English restaurant and to the right of Makan restaurant.)
Lunch
There will be a 1 hour break for lunch. Bring a brown bag to stay and hang out, or get outside and stretch your legs. There are plenty of establishments nearby, including the Coupe cafe, Giant Grocery, Odd Provisions, Sticky Fingers and more.
